Spend the day experiencing some of the most beautiful sandy white beaches in the Caribbean! Saona Island is a popular area within Cotubanamá National Park with native birds, starfish, dolphins, whales, and manatees. It’s also an important turtle nesting site in the Dominican Republic. Not only is the island picturesque with clear turquoise water, powdery beaches, and tall coconut trees, but it’s also the perfect romantic escape. The water surrounding Saona Island is generally shallow and ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
Most trips depart from Bayahibe and stops may include swimming at Palmilla beach and Mano Juan beach. It’s recommended to book your tour in advance with a local operator or through the concierge at your hotel. Or see our directory for available excursions to Saona Island.
Plan time exploring Altos de Chavón together, a replica of a 16th-century European town, complete with cobblestoned streets and terracotta masonry. It was built in 1976 to be La Romana’s cultural center. Altos de Chavón has an incredible view of the Chavón River where you can stop for photos or a drink at X. You may even find souvenirs at Ciudad de los Artistas (City of Artists), home to art studios, craft workshops, and influential galleries where locals and students practice ceramics, fashion, design, and other handicrafts.
Before arriving at Altos de Chavón, plan to stop at La Estancia to visit Cigar Country (the Dominican Republic’s premier cigar shop) and the award-winning Mabel Chocolate Factory. La Romana is known for its chocolate and cigar exports.
After a quick stop, arrive at Altos de Chavón and be sure to visit the amphitheater, St. Stanislaus Church (a popular wedding venue), and Archeological Museum. The museum is a great look into the indigenous culture of the Dominican Republic. If you opt to stay past dark, Altos de Chavón turns into a magical place with romantic lighting and dining verandas. Perfect for date night!
If you opt to only spend the day at Altos de Chavon, make a reservation for dinner at Casa de Campo Marina. We recommend SBG for poolside views and atmosphere or Causa for delicious Peruvian food.
See our directory for available excursions to Altos de Chavon.
After a full day of relaxing at your resort, consider visiting Bayahibe for sunset. Ideally, try to arrive around 4:00 PM to visit a local craft store called La Pereskia de Bayahibe asociación de artesanos, and then stroll along the beach as the sun starts to sink into the horizon. We recommend finding a beach bar to sit back, clink glasses, and enjoy a romantic sunset.
While you’re enjoying Bayahibe, ask your hotel concierge to make a reservation at Kukka Beach for an oceanside dinner. The romantic atmosphere and the delicious food are the perfect way to end a beautiful day in paradise.
You don’t need permission, but we encourage you Relax with a capital R on your last day in paradise. Soak up the sun, sip your favorite cocktail, or float in the pool. Better yet, turn it up a notch by treating you and your partner to a luxurious spa treatment at your hotel.
